What is a TMD?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the name of the joint located on either side of your head, just in front of your ears. These joints connect your jawbone to the skull. This joint in combination with other muscles and ligaments, lets you chew, swallow, speak and yawn. When you have a problem with the muscle, bone or other tissue in the area around the TMJ, you may have a TMD.

What causes TMD?

This condition is caused by a combination of factors like jaw injuries and joint disease, such as arthritis. It is believed that bruxism (tooth clenching or grinding) and head or neck muscle tension may make TMD symptoms worse. Stress is also a possible factor. However, it is not clear if stress causes TMDs or is a result of them.

TMJ Treatment Options in Edmonton

Every patient's needs are different, and TMJ treatment depends on several factors, such as age, medical history, how your teeth align (occlusion), muscle activity, and whether you have

missing teeth or existing dental work.

At our clinic, we offer a range of treatments for TMJ disorder, including:

  • Dental Splints: Devices that help stabilize your bite and reduce jaw strain.
  • Orthodontics: Braces or aligners can correct alignment issues that contribute to TMJ pain.
  • Orthotics: Custom devices designed to reposition the jaw for better comfort and function.

Since each situation is unique, we recommend booking a free consultation to discuss the best treatment option for you.

Neuromodulator Injections for TMJ

In addition to traditional treatments, we also offer neuromodulator injections to help relieve jaw pain caused by grinding (bruxism) and muscle tension from TMJ disorder. These injections work by:

  • Relaxing overactive muscles: Neuromodulators block nerve signals that cause involuntary muscle contractions, helping to reduce pain and discomfort.
  • Reducing teeth grinding: By calming the muscles that cause grinding, the treatment can help protect your teeth from damage.

If you struggle with muscle-related jaw pain or excessive grinding, neuromodulator injections may be an effective solution.
